Physical DescriptionBlack and white photograph of John F. Kennedy at Yosemite National Park
Historical NoteThis photograph was taken when President Kennedy visited Yosemite National Park in August of 1962. It was given to the president by Stewart Udall, Secretary of the Interior from 1961-1969.
Yosemite, along with other natural wonders of the American West, helped to define the modern conservation movement. When President Abraham Lincoln authorized the establishment of the "Yosemite Grant" in 1865, it marked the first time a large area of wilderness was set aside by the federal government for its preservation as a uniquely American natural wonder. A new industry--tourism--began to flourish with the establishment of railroads linking east to west, allowing larger numbers of curious visitors the chance to see these formerly remote sites. In 20 years, the uncontrolled use of Yosemite by travelers and those wanting to exploit its natural resources caused naturalist John Muir to call for greater protection that resulted in Yosemite being made a national park in 1890. In 1916, Yosemite was taken over by the newly-created National Park Service.
