Physical DescriptionCrystal vase etched with a portrait of Commodore John Barry and dates 1745-1803 on one side and a ship on the other.
Historical NoteThis vase was presented to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy by the Ambassador to Ireland, Thomas J. Kiernan on St. Patrick's Day, 1964. Irish-born Commodore James Barry, the subject of the engraved portrait on the vase, offered his services to the Continental Congress during the American Revolution. He became a leading officer, first in the Continental Navy and later in the new U.S. Navy.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
