Physical DescriptionShip model of the 44 gun French frigate of the line "Melpomene." The bow has a warrior figurehead. This model was crafted by a prisoner of war during the French Revolutionary or Napoleonic wars.
Historical NoteThe Melpomene was captured and taken into the British Royal Navy in 1794 by Lord Hood. This was part of President Kennedy's personal collection.

Custodial History NoteItem is from the personal collection of President Kennedy. It was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1979.
