Physical DescriptionAntique silver coffer with lions' heads on clasp and handles. The chest is decorated with floral and scroll ornamentation on sides and on lid. The interior is lined with a red velvet. The Colonial silver of Peru, while European in concept, shows a blending of Iberian designs and forms, with indigenous influences that trace back to pre-Hispanic times.
Historical NoteThe chest was presented to President John F. Kennedy by the President of Peru, Manuel Prado Ugarteche during his state visit to the White House on September 19, 1961.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
