Physical DescriptionSilver chest with a hinged lid. The exterior is embossed in relief with Celtic knot work along the edges on all four sides. The seal of Edinburgh is engraved on the exterior front. The lid is engraved with the inscription: "Presented by the Corporation of Edinburgh along with the Burgess Ticket conferring the Freedom of the City, His Excellency the Hon. Joseph Patrick Kennedy Ambassador of the United States of America to the Court of St. James 21st April, 1939, The Rt. Hon. Henry Steel, Lord Provost." "Freedom of the City" is a ceremonial award, given by a local government to those who have served in some exceptional capacity, or upon any whom the City wishes to bestow an honour.
Historical NoteThis chest was presented to Ambassador Joseph Patrick Kennedy as a symbol of the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh on April 21, 1939.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was owned by the Kennedy Family and donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy in 1974.
