Physical DescriptionPlastic and Lucite model of the Apollo command module on a wood base. The teardrop-shaped command module has four windows, it is painted on both sides with "UNITED STATES" above an American flag sticker. The brass plaque on base is inscribed: "Apollo command module 1/15 scale presented to John F. Kennedy, President of the United States on the occasion of his visit to NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Houston, Texas 12 September 1962."
Historical NoteThe teardrop-shaped APOLLO command module, the living quarters for the three-man crews, had a different shape from the conical-nosed GEMINI and MERCURY. The attached cylindrical service module contained supplies as well as the Service Propulsion System engine that placed the vehicle in and out of lunar orbit.

This model was presented to President Kennedy on his visit to NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas on September 12, 1962.

Custodial History NoteThis item is material associated with the White House the Kennedy Administration and the Executive Offices of the President. It was either government property or was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
