Historical NoteAfter her tour of India and Pakistan in March 1962, Jacqueline Kennedy stopped in London briefly before returning to the White House. Her only appointment in the city was a lunch with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The First Lady described the invitation to reporters as "a great honor and it is very kind of the Queen to invite me." French painter Jacqueline Duheme commemorated the event in this painting, one of a series of 15 part of a series of 15 watercolors commissioned by Mrs. Kennedy. Duheme, however, took artistic liberties in her composition--in fact, there were 13 guests at the luncheon.
