Physical DescriptionMiniature painting depicting the Kennedy Family on the staircase and gathering around a Christmas tree in their Palm Beach home. Family members are John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Caroline and John Jr, Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Kennedy.
Historical NoteFrench illustrator Jacqueline Duheme created a series of 20 oil paintings of events in the life of President John F. Kennedy. These fantasied scenes were admired by Jacqueline Kennedy, who had earlier commissioned Duheme to create a group of watercolors of the First Lady's European travels.
In this scene the artist depicts the Kennedys like an average middle-class American family on Christmas morning. The adults in the extended Kennedy clan start downstairs to join the children, who have already surrounded the tree looking for their gifts. Two of the First Family's dogs, Clipper and Charlie, are included, adding to the sense of family intimacy.
