Historical NoteIn 1960, John F. Kennedy, then a U.S. Senator, was the Democratic presidential nominee. Kennedy had a long-standing association with Hyannis Port, located within Barnstable County, Massachusetts. The Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port served as a base for his presidential campaign and later as his "Summer White House". He and his family gathered there to await the results of the 1960 Presidential election. When the news of his victory was announced, Kennedy gave his acceptance speech at the Hyannis Armory in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
