Historical NoteIn the 1960 Presidential campaign Kennedy actively sought to engage Italian American communities through various means. This included attending events hosted by Italian American organizations, like the Italian American Charitable Society. Kennedy’s campaign speeches often highlighted shared values and the contributions of Italian Americans to the nation, as he did in his remarks to the Italian American Charitable Society, emphasizing the importance of community and helping those in need which highlighted common values. Kennedy also addressed the concerns of Italian Americans regarding immigration policies, particularly discriminatory quotas that limited Italian immigration to the US. He championed the idea of fair immigration policies that recognized the value of all people.
