Historical NoteArtist Diaby Youssouf's painting of workers on a cocoa plantation was given to President Kennedy by the president of the Republic of the Ivory Coast, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, on May 22, 1962. President Houphouët-Boigny may have chosen this painting to give to President Kennedy because the subject matter typified life for many who lived in the Ivory Coast, where the majority of the world's cocoa is produced.
