Historical NoteArtist Diaby Youssouf's painting of workers on a cocoa plantation was given to President Kennedy by the president of the Republic of the Ivory Coast, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, on May 22, 1962. President Houphouët-Boigny may have chosen this painting to give to President Kennedy because the subject matter typified life for many who lived in the Ivory Coast, where the majority of the world's cocoa is produced.

Custodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
