Physical DescriptionModel of the Mariner II spacecraft with base. The model is made from metal painted silver with a black plastic base. White plastic lettering adhered to the base spell United States of America Mariner II Spacecraft.
Historical NoteThe President was presented with a model of the Mariner 2 spacecraft on January 17, 1963 from NASA officials James E. Webb and William H. Pickering involved in the project. The Mariner II launched on August 27, 1962. On December 14, 1962 came within 21,607 miles of Venus and became the first spacecraft to operate in the immediate vicinity of another planet and return useful scientific information, sending back data on its atmosphere, mass, and weather patterns to the Earth.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was presented to President Kennedy in 1963 by NASA. It was held by the General Service Administration until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
