Physical DescriptionIvory model of an ancient Egyptian barge. Several intricately carved figures of ancient Egyptians stand on the deck with a central figure under a canopy-like shelter. The figure has the face of a bird and is holding a staff. Two oars with bird's heads on the handles are attached to the boat at each side. The model is mounted on a wooden base.
Historical NoteThis model of an ancient Egyptian barge was presented as a gift to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy by the president of Egypt (1954-1970), Gamal Abdel-Nassar. The boat model was delivered in person by Salah Nasir, director of the General Intelligence Agency in Cairo, and received for Mrs. Kennedy by John McClone, director of the CIA.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
