In 1952 Nyerere obtained a masters from the University of Edinburgh, studying economics and history. Served as the first Prime Minister of the independent Tanganyika, prior the country was a British territory. In 1962 Nyerere was elected President of Tangenyika when the country went from a constitutional monarchy to a Republic. In 1964 Tangenyika became Tanzania, and Nyerere served as President from 1964 until his retirement in 1985. During his time as President, Nyerere was considered an African Socialist.
Remained a key figure in African events, his last public role was in 1996 when he was a key mediator during the Burundi conflict. Nyerere died of leukaemia in 1999.
