Romulo Betancourt

President of Venezuela
Served as President of Venezuela from 1945 - 1948 and again from 1959-1964. Betancourt first became president in 1945 due to a military coup d'etat and his first term ended with the President being forced into exile.
Betancourt accomplished a great deal as president of Venezuela. He declared universal suffrage for his citizens, instituted social reforms and reorganized the country's oil industry securing a larger amount of oil profit for the country of Venezuela. During his first term, Betancourt worked with the International Refugee Organization to aid refugees from World War II.

After returning from exile, Betancourt was again elected president. He survived an assassination attempt in 1960 and remained in office until 1964.
