Member of the Christian Democrat Party, became speaker of the Chamber of Deputies from 1955 and 1963, elected Prime Minister a second time in 1968. Leone was elected President in 1971, but resigned in 1978 amidst scandal referred to as the Lockheed bribery scandal.
