Paul Loring

Cartoonist for the Providence Evening Bulletin
Born Paul Stetson Loring in Portland, Maine in 1899, he demonstrated an early natural talent for drawing and quickly developed an inimitable style. He contributed drawings to newspapers and magazines throughout the country, but was best known for the editorial cartoons he drew for the Providence Journal-Bulletin for more than 33 years. His work also appeared regularly in Yankee and Yachting magazines.
Loring's cartoons, both on the editorial pages and elsewhere with news stories and columns, drew a regular following. Artistically, they were simple in form but the quickly drawn lines and jots always delivered clear commentary with wit and humor in a homespun manner, much like the artist himself. Published weekly in magazines, his marine art, sketches and watercolors sold briskly from his waterfront Wickford, Rhode Island home, dubbed "Lorring's Shanty."
