Gilroy Roberts sculpted the obverse, the Kennedy portrait, for the Kennedy half dollar. He used the Presidential medal as a model and the design was approved by Mrs. Kennedy. His assistant engraver, Frank Gasparro, sculpted the reverse. Roberts served as the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1948 - 1964, he was the nineth Chief Engraver. After retiring from the US Mint, he went on to be the chairman of the Franklin Mint until 1971.
