Samuel L. AkintolaPremier of the Western Region of Nigeria, Nigerian 1910-1966

Akintola received training as a lawyer in the United Kingdom. Upon his return to Nigeria in 1949 he became politically active in a political group named "Action Group". He served as the group's deputy leader. Prior to Nigeria's independence, Akintola served as the country's minister of health, communications and aviation. In late 1959 Akintola became Premier of the Western Region of Nigeria. Akintola was assassinated in Ibadan, Nigeria on January 15, 1966, the day of Nigeria's first Military Coup, ending the First Republic of Nigeria.
