On October 26, 1956 Hassan was nominated as Crown Prince by his unlce King Idris I. As Crown Prince he undertook many official trips to the United States most notably for the purchase of US built fighter jets from the Kennedy Administration.

On August 4, 1969 King Idris I presented a document to the Libyian Senate declaring his abdication of the throne effective September 2, 1969. However, on September 1, while the King was out of the country, a group of Libyian army officers (including Colonel Muammar al-Quaddafi) staged a rebellion and announced that King Idris I had been deposed. Due to this uprising, Idris was unable to complete his reign and Hassan never becamse king. Instead the prince lived under house arrest for many years in Libya.
