Robert Kennedy graduated from Milton Academy in 1944 and then enlisted in the United States Navy (Reserves) from 1944 until 1946. Kennedy graduated Harvard University in 1948 and went on to law school at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1951. Kennedy was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1951. He was then an attorney for the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice until 1952.

Kennedy was the campaign manager for his brother John’s successful Senate campaign in 1952.

In 1953 Robert Kennedy briefly worked on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (also known as the McCarthy Committee) where he was an assistant council, working for Roy Cohn. Kennedy worked on this committee for six months.

Kennedy became well known for his time served as chief council of the Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in the Labor or Management Field, where he served from 1957 – 1960. It was during this time that Kennedy lead the investigation into the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and their leader, Jimmy Hoffa.

In 1960 Robert Kennedy served as the campaign manager for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. After JFK’s election, Robert Kennedy was appointed Attorney General. Robert Kennedy served as Attorney General of the United States from January, 1961 until his resignation on September 3, 1964.

Robert Kennedy was elected to the United States Senate in 1964 in the state of New York. Kennedy was sworn in to his seat on January 3, 1965 where he served until his death in June of 1968.

In the Senate, Kennedy became most known for supporting legislation to help the Nation’s poor. He was also an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War. In 1966, Kennedy began advocating negotiations for peace and troop withdrawal from Vietnam. Kennedy ran for President in 1968, and was shot the night of the California Primary, which he won.

Robert Kennedy married Ethel Kennedy on June 17, 1950. They had eleven children.
