James A. Mitchell
He was born on June 21, 1932 in Baltimore. He studied in NYC at the Art Students League under Frank Riley. He is best known as a marine painter, concentrating on famous yachts and sailing ships.
He works primarily in oil but also in watercolor and has produced a series of pen and ink prints with sepia wash that are still in circulation.
His work has been carried in galleries in New York City, Boston, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, New Haven, and Mystic, CT. Eight of his large oil portraits of ships are at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, and many of his larger paintings and ship prints are on the market.
Currently, Mitchell has been focusing on book illustration for Flat Hammock Press in Mystic, CT.
He resides in Noank, CT, where he lives among the shells of his antique boats, with a view of the Long Island Sound.
