Thomas R. Ellinwood, editorial cartoonist and executive editor of the Arizona Daily Star, in Tuscon, Arizona. He was born in Bisbee and attended Amherst College and the University of Arizona. After graduating from the University of Arizona in1945, he went to work for the Star; which his family co-owned with the newspaper’s publisher, William Rankin Mathews. In 1956, his column “Rod and Gun” became a feature in the Star. In 1957, he
began drawing political cartoons commenting on the social and political atmosphere of the nation, Arizona and the Southwest. After his family sold the newspaper, he moved to a
ranch in New Mexico. He died in 1995.
