Physical DescriptionCarved wood sculpture of a male gazelle with his head turned toward the side. The gazelle is carved from a single piece of wood which includes the base. The wood surface is smooth with a visible grain.
Historical NoteThis is one of two sculptures presented to President Kennedy by the prime minister of Tanganyika, Julius K. Nyerere, during his state visit to the White House on July 15, 1963.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
