Physical DescriptionWWII patch of the 4th Infantry Division. Square army green needlepoint with emerald green design embroidered over it.
Historical NoteAs a World War II war correspondent for Collier's, Ernest Hemingway was attached to the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division. He witnessed the D-Day landings at Normandy and the liberation of Paris. The writer courted controversy, as well, by "playing soldier" in the words of one division member. Hemingway would subsequently use World War II as the backdrop for his novel "Across the River and Into the Trees" (1950).
