Physical DescriptionKennedy Half dollar proof, encircled by a laurel wreath, affixed to a blue velvet covered board, with a silver plated plaque below inscribed "This is the second John Fitzgerald Kennedy proof half dollar struck on February 11, 1964 at the Philadelphia Mint. Certified by Michael H. Sura, Superintendent of the Mint, and Sydney C. Euges, Chief Coiner." The design for the half dollar is based on the profile portrait of the Inaugural Medal. Removed from frame.
Historical NoteChanging the design of the half dollar took an act of Congress, because coin designs could not be changed more frequently than every 25 years, and the Franklin half dollar was only 15 years old.
Additional Details
Custodial History NoteItem was received by the Executive Office of the President after the death of President Kennedy in 1963, it was transferred to General Service Office and held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
