Physical DescriptionGold medallion commemorating the resolve of a boundary issue of the United States of America and Mexico signed by President Johnson and President Mateos as part of the Chamizal Treaty in 1964. Obverse has crossed Mexican and United States Flags with 'United States of America/ United Mexican States' engraved around rim. Reverse has 'Lyndon B. Johnson/ CHAMIZAL/ Aldolpo Lopez Mateos/ September 25, 1964 with olive branches.
Historical NoteThe Chamizal dispute continued to affect Mexico-United States relations adversely until President John F. Kennedy agreed to settle it on the basis of the 1911 arbitration award. It was hoped that settlement of the dispute would strengthen the "Alliance for Progress" and solidify the Organization of American States. The treaty of Chamizal was finally signed by President Johnson in October of 1967.

Custodial History NoteItem was a gift from President Lyndon B. Johnson to Jacqueline Kennedy received after the death of President Kennedy in 1963. It was held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
