Adali Stevenson is sitting on his lap looking down in disgust at a football labeled "Sec. of State" while Santa (JFK) holds a candy cane U.N. Post. Caption reads: "Not exactly What He Wanted for Christmas".
Historical NoteDuring the 1960 Presidential Campaign, John F. Kennedy and Adai Stevenson were political rivals. Kennedy's plan was to offer Stevenson a quid pro quo deal: if Stevenson would formally withdraw from the race and announce his support for Kennedy, Kennedy would promise Stevenson the post of Secretary of State in the Kennedy cabinet. This never came into fruition, Stevenson refused the post and became the United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 1961 to 1965.
