Historical NotePresident John F. Kennedy was a strong advocate for a ban on nuclear weapons testing and for reducing the threat of nuclear war. He believed that nuclear proliferation would make the world more dangerous and lead to a global nuclear war.
In 1963, Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev signed the Limited Test Ban Treaty, which prohibited nuclear tests in the atmosphere, space, and underwater.
