Historical NoteSeptember 26, 1960 marked the airing of first televised presidential debate in U.S. history, seen by over 65 million viewers. This was the first of four scheduled debates between Vice-President Richard Nixon and Senator John F. Kennedy. These debates are widely acknowledged to have been a catalyst for the role TV would play in the American electoral process. Historians continue to analyze the degree to which popular mass media has had the effect of making issues secondary to public image and personality.
This editorial cartoon's subject is style versus substance. Both candidates are likened to performers, with JFK, considered the more photogenic candidate during the first debate, carrying a briefcase marked "Issues" and Nixon carrying boxes of makeup.
