Physical DescriptionWorld War I, Austrian Navy boarding saber, or "entersabel", with a wrapped sharkskin hilt and split knuckle guard. The saber has a black leather scabbard. Inscription plate is engraved: Entersabel Der Osterreichischen Kriegsmarine"
Historical NoteThis Saber was presented to President Kennedy in May 3, 1962 by the Federal Chancellor of Austria, Dr. Alfons Gorbach during his state visit to the White House.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
